Day 7

Another episode of Black Mirror that we watched today was “Hated in the Nation”. It uses the metaphor of swarming bees(ADIs) to demonstrate how mob mentality leads to damaging moral indignation on social media, similar to how a mindless swarm swoops down on its prey. It criticizes the widespread distribution of unreflective emotional reactions on social media, which is a crucial component of what keeps us hooked on these platforms. User addictions that cause intense emotional reactions online are well-known to social media firms. As a result, the episode subtly blames these internet platforms for enabling and promoting indignation, including hate speech, threats of violence, and more, primarily for their own gain.

The most intriguing concept I had while watching the film was that any piece of technology created by man has the potential to be utilized both for good and for evil, depending on who controls it. Another aspect to consider is that no technology can be totally safeguarded at all times. The way the people traded their phone numbers by holding them together, the car’s interaction, and the office’s basic, professional design were all part of what made the episode believable.
